100% solar-powered economies a reality

South Australia became the first major jurisdiction to generate 100% of its electricity from solar

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) reported that for the first time in October, South Australia set a record as the first major jurisdiction globally to satisfy its entire electricity needs using solar power for a period of one hour.

Rooftop solar panels contributed nearly 80% of the total with utility-scale solar providing the balance.

While one hour (when the sun is shining) hardly provides energy security for an economy, this milestone is nevertheless significant because it validates the fact that renewables have reached a material threshold in early adopting jurisdictions. This stage of maturity (while far from mature) will foster investments in a range of complementary technologies from grid management technologies to energy storage and electric vehicles and forge a transformational path for others to follow.
